They shed light on the historic heart of C\u00f6lln and make tangible a part of the town that was lost for good with the demolition of the Petrikirche (St Peter\u2019s Church) in 1964. The remains uncovered include, among others the skeletons of the town\u2019s earliest inhabitants, the remains of cellars and houses from the 13th century, foundation walls of the church and the Latin school of C\u00f6lln as well as cellars of a 20th-century department store. Today, the site is home to the Hotel Capri by Fraser, which opened in 2017, alongside the PETRI Berlin and the construction site for the House of One. The latter being a multireligious centre of Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities aimed at open dialogue and peaceful existence. For at this very spot, at the junction of Breite Stra\u00dfe, M\u00fchlendamm, Gertraudenstra\u00dfe and Fischerinsel, stood C\u00f6lln Town Hall for at least 450 years. This sister of medieval Berlin occupied the southern part of the Spree Island. It was only in 1710 that both towns were joined to one municipality, together with two other nearby towns.<br>Like pre-war Berlin, C\u00f6lln was characterised by dense neighbourhoods with low-rise buildings. Today, hardly anything of this remains above ground. However, a visit to the lobby of the hotel Capri by Fraser reveals traces of the lost historical structures. Following the excavations at Petriplatz, the remains of buildings from the Middle Ages up to the modern period were preserved there. They can be seen in an archaeological window.<br>The oldest visible architectural structure is a fieldstone wall dating from the 14th or early 15th century. This wall may have belonged to the medieval town hall of C\u00f6lln. It is not known when the citizens of C\u00f6lln first established a town hall; the earliest written mention dates from 1448. However, a town hall may have existed in C\u00f6lln as early as the 13th century. This seems plausible as C\u00f6lln, like the neighbouring Berlin, became a town under medieval law in the first half of that century.<br>Historical records mention a \u2018court arbour\u2019 as part of the town hall complex. This part of the town hall was dedicated for the administration of justice. With several open sides on the ground floor, court was held there in public. Many medieval town halls in northern Germany and the Mark Brandenburg featured such a structure, including the one in Berlin. In front of C\u00f6lln Town Hall \u2013 in the area of today\u2019s road junction \u2013 lay the market square, also known as \u2018K\u00f6llnischer Fischmarkt\u2019. It was used for public control of the weight of goods and the levying of duties on them, such as taxes or customs duties. Not even a hundred years later, the old town hall was replaced by a new Baroque building.<br>The reason was King Frederick I\u2019s plan to merge the governing bodies of Berlin and C\u00f6lln and to have the joint council meet there. In 1710, the two towns were united with the municipalities of Friedrichstadt, Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichswerder to form the royal capital of Berlin. However, Frederick I\u2019s son and successor, Frederick William I, did not pursue this plan further. By 1899, the Baroque town hall of C\u00f6lln was no linger in use and demolished to make way for the widening of the adjacent street called Gertraudenstra\u00dfe.<br>The town hall complex comprised not only the town hall building itself, but also several neighbouring buildings. Within this complex, the town weigh house was relocated to the side facing Petriplatz already in 1829. This is suggested by the size and layout of the plots. Although the town\u2019s medieval layout remained largely intact until the 19th century and, in some cases, until the Second World War, the merging of individual plots occurred repeatedly from the late Middle Ages onwards. <br>The preserved wall remains and floor surfaces inside the Archaeological Window date from the 14th or 15th to the 19th century. Many extensions and alterations can be traced in the structures. Generations of homeowners repeatedly adapted the buildings to changing needs, replacing floors, extending buildings into courtyard areas, and adding or removing parts of the houses. They are located just a few metres apart. They are likely to date from about the same epoch. The well is dated to the 19th century. And between the middle and the end of that century, Berlin\u2019s central water supply and sewage system were established. The well in the cellar of No. 22 is situated in an area that originally formed a courtyard. It is unclear, however, whether it was built into the house or was already dug into the in courtyard prior to its development. It stood roughly where the C\u00f6lln town hall had previously been located. Around 1900, this department store company occupied the entire block between Breite Stra\u00dfe, Neumannsgasse, Br\u00fcderstra\u00dfe and Scharrenstra\u00dfe. Since its founding on Breite Stra\u00dfe in 1839, it had grown to become the largest department store in Berlin. Its business model was innovative within 19th century commerce: a mail-order catalogue with fixed prices. The company also had a store in the German colony in what is now Namibia. Kaufhaus Rudolph Hertzog was the only major department store company to survive the Nazi era under the ownership of its founders, as they were not persecuted.<br>Almost the entire department store complex, as well as the buildings at Scharrenstra\u00dfe 21 and 22, were destroyed during the Second World War. Among the finds from this violent period uncovered during the excavations are air-raid shelters and glass beads from the department store\u2019s jewellery section. it dates from 1908\u20131909. The company\u2019s history effectively came to an end with the expropriation of Rudolph Hertzog\u2019s descendants by the GDR in 1949. The state\u2019s administration set up a fashion store in the building. After the German reunification, the building stood empty; it was renovated between 2015 and 2018 and is now back in use. The fact that a major online retailer has set up offices there seems like an interesting twist in history. <br>The building at 26 Br\u00fcderstra\u00dfe and the archaeological remains in the hotel Capri are listed monuments. They shed light on the historic heart of C\u00f6lln and make tangible a part of the town that was lost for good with the demolition of the Petrikirche (St Peter\u2019s Church) in 1964. The remains uncovered include, among others the skeletons of the town\u2019s earliest inhabitants, the remains of cellars and houses from the 13th century, foundation walls of the church and the Latin school of C\u00f6lln as well as cellars of a 20th-century department store. Today, the site is home to the Hotel Capri by Fraser, which opened in 2017, alongside the PETRI Berlin and the construction site for the House of One. The latter being a multireligious centre of Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities aimed at open dialogue and peaceful existence.
